I don't want to add any flames to this fire... but (and this is strictly
my opinion and I won't be offended if anyone disagrees, and obviously
some will) if David can make a bit of money while offering good
information at the same time, I think that's just fine.
Having run a Web hosting company for almost four years, I can say with a
good bit of authority that the compensation offered by associates
programs such as Amazon and others, for a relatively low-traffic site
are literally pennies when compared to the costs of operating and
maintaining a site, especially in view of how current David keeps his
site. I used to tell my clients who thought they were going to make a
fortune on such things, the same thing.
I sold my company last year, and now have to pay for the space my
website occupies. My gerbil site is signed up with several associates
programs, which I joined because I was recommending their products
anyway, since they have some really good deals. So if it comes down to
getting paid a few cents to recommend them, or not getting paid to
recommend them, I'll take the money to help pay for my Web hosting
costs. (And in truth, it doesn't nearly begin to cover my costs... I
keep my site up because I enjoy sharing the information there with
others who have similar interests.)
Just my opinion. I respect yours even if it differs. :-)
Regards,
Rick
