Personally, I wouldn't recommend trimming your gerbil's nails yourself unless you're sure you know what you're doing. My vet taught me how (i.e.., how to restrain them to keep them still, how much to cut, etc) and I'm still not totally comfortable with it. Remember, just because the nails feel long to you doesn't mean they're too long for the gerbil!
