This can be serious. An antibiotic like Wet-tail medicine or those sold
in US petshops for birds is a good idea. Also treat any other gerbil who
live in the same group.

Gerbils normally get diarrhoea through a diet too high in vegetables, or
from an infection like Tyzzer's Disease, E. coli and Listeria. These
diseases are highly infectious, can cause death very quickly and in the
latter two cases, can make people seriously ill. So it is important to
take this seriously.

They don't normally eat plastic. Their mouths are designed so they can
chew things with their front teeth without the item entering their
mouth. Be careful of sharp edges on chewed plastic.
