I recently got 4 gerbils from a family who was about to have a baby and
didn't want their gerbils any more. They all lived together in a 30 gallon
tank. The woman knew for sure 1 was a male, and knew for sure 1 was a
female (she had 2 litters while living with them - they kept 2 of the babies
for a total of 4). They didn't know whether the babies were male or female.

When I got them home I determined that there was 1 adult male, 1 adult
female (who looks very pregnant by the way), and 2 smaller females (about
3-4 months old I would guess).

I took the adult male and female and put them in a separate 20 gallon tank.
I left the two smaller females in the 30 gallon tank. My problem is that
these two smaller females BOTH look pregnant to me - it's hard to tell, but
it's possible. I know the adult female is - she looks like she'll have the
pups any day.

Do I leave the two girls together? What if one would have a litter - would
it be safe to leave her sister in there?

I hope someone has some suggestions for me...I would hate to split them up
if they aren't pregnant. Also, I work full time. It is very possible that
I will miss it if one of the girls has pups. I really don't want to come
home to some dead pups because the sister attacked them...
Should I just wait and see if they get any bigger? What are my chances
here?

Thanks in advance!
