Compulsive Digging

Hello everyone.   I was just wondering why my gerbils keep digging at the corners for no apparent reason?...there are no wood chips or anything in the corners, so they are not accomplishing anything... The reason I am asking this is because the gerbils are in my room and they drive me crazy at night when I'm trying to get to sleep!   Jason
