As I am trying to figure out what colors the 37 juvenile and
adult gerbils I rescued (pups are a lot more...); I have
some that are really stumping me.
With hope, tonight, I shall use a videocamera and Snappy
and get some pictures up. In the meantime....
1.) The ones that look black to me, in good light have a
sort of soft blue sheen; and not glossy depthful black, the
bluish sheen makes them look more sooty grey. All of
the ones that are 'black' also have a white bit on their chin
that runs down onto their chest. Eyes are black, nails are
black.
Would this be slate instead?
2.) I parted the fur on this one several times. The undercoat
appears white. The rest of the hair and overcoat is a light
gold color, almost a yellow. Eyes are red.
????
3.) Gold or yellow undercoat, gold-brown overcoat. No ticking.
This one is browner compared to #2, makes #2 look light yellow.
Eyes are black.
??? A light agouti? Or something else?
4.) I have some with the grey undercoat, yellow or gold middle hair,
and black ticking over. I understand those are 'Nutmeg'. #3 is
darker brown than the gold or yellow coat part of the nutmeg. [This
is only for clarification of the color of #2 and #3 above] #2 is lighter
in color, more blonde or yellow, than the gold or yellow coat part of
this nutmeg....
5.) What is the difference shadewise between Pink, Ruby, and
Red eyed? I have a number of whites; all seem to be solidly
white (no cream or ivory tint) and all have fairly dark reddish eyes,
compared to the albino dwarf hamsters I have.
6.) The matriarchal female of the largest community I rescued,
in good light...her body is the same almost-black with the blue
tinge; and she shows some asymmetrical brownish tinted patches
of fur, mostly on her back and hind quarters. The brown is a dark
burnt chocolate brown tint or sheen, and not obvious unless she
is held in very good light. Her nails seem black, as are her eyes.
