Males usually don't fight over the females, females fight over the
MALES! Females are the dominant sex in this species, so the males won't
fight.

This is correct, In gerbil society Females retain breeding rights. The
males will fight for a different reason. If you have two adult males and
you add a female, this will upset the hierarchy. Thereby, causing
dominance issues between the males.
