Doug,
Having been through this grief many times I know how you feel. I still
feel the loss of Miss Piggy, a totally unique gerbil who died awhile
back. She had a heart seizure and I had the horrible experience of
watching her thrash around the tank a few minutes before she died.
6 years old is an incredibly long life for a gerbil, and be glad he/she
went during sleep. Small comfort, I know, but still ...
You didn't mention if the 5 year old is male or female. If male I would
find 2 male 5-6 week old pups to put with him. It would make him happy,
and when he passes on the two will still have each other, and you will
still have companions. I have found one of the best ways for me to deal
with the grief is to focus on my living gerbils.
I intended to say more but I'm afraid my own memories are a bit too strong
and emotional right now. As Bill has pointed out, there are some sites on
pet loss you can visit. I have several listed on my memorial page,
http://thesanctuary.tripod.com/memorial.html, along with some books I have
found. If anyone can think of other resources to list, please let me
know. I'd like to have more than just sites and books.
