I would recommend taking it out entirely if the pups are moving around and
exploring.  They can get inside the wheel and get flung around when the
adults run on it.  I also had one gerbil mother that would carry a pup to
the wheel and try to run with it!  I just made a habit of giving my
breeding gerbils a bigger tank to roam around in, and no wheel.
