Hi all,
I've been on the list for quite a while mostly reading and learning.
After reading about the mite problems I'm a little concerned.
I've noticed a few 'moving dustspecks' on the lids of our tanks,
since we started using dirt as bedding.
Our gerbils appear happy and healthy, I never see any mites on
them or any red ones (meaning full of blood) crawling on the tanks or dirt.
They aren't scratching and their fur and skin looks fine.
It's been months since I noticed the first mites and I asked at
the petstore where I first saw a dirt set-up. They have the same mites
and no problems either, so far.
They don't seem to be multiplying as far as I can tell.
Are there harmless mites that just live in and off the dirt and don't
bother the gerbils?
Or should I get mitespray just in case? And is the spray in any way
dangerous to the gerbils?
