I use a large flat heavy shallow saucer plate, and chinchilla
dust. Put the saucer in the cage, part the bedding so it sits
as flat as possible. Pour about a quarter cup of chinchilla
dust (I use a little less than a level measuring cup) in the
plate and flatten it out a little.

Watch. The first time or two you do this, it s fun to watch the
gerbils and their curiosity sneak up on it and explore. Old
veterans, you have a problem getting the dust onto the plate
without them in the middle of it.

I treat a pair to an hour or so of 'gerbil beauty bath'; then take
the plate out and clean the cage. They will get it all over...
most of my pairs are now getting this as a weekly treat. I'm
sure it could be done more often, but I don't like leaving the
dust around...if there is extra after removing the plate, they'll
roll in that too. And whatever else is there mixed in the dust.
