Hi all,
I have been going through some of the posts and am concerned. It does
not matter to me who we settle this question, but one thing is clear, if it is
dragged out for too long it will cause the self destruction of both lists.
1.) GML is not meeting the desired needs
of all of its members
a.) Many young people,
and perhaps old, view GML as a social outlet. Laugh, cry, ask
questions, and brag.
b.) Some people are
frustrated with the many different levels of this. "My gerbil just had 6
pups." "Two of my little ones died!" "My gerbil did the cutes
thing!"
c.) The truth is 99% of
the world does not care what our gerbils did today, if we are
rejoicing, or if we are grieving.
d.) When faced with a
crisis we are less aware of other people and more aware of our own
needs. I will admit that on a good day I can spend an hour or
two looking through the archives and web sites in search
of information. However, when one of my gerbils
was sick, and teetering on the edge, I became frustrated when
the information was not easily found. Is this right? No, but
the next time I face a life and death crisis.... It may happen again.
2.) There are three possible solutions to
the current problem.
a.) GML will remain a
primary list for questions, and permanent conversations. While
SocialGML will be a place that people can write about their day, a cute story,
personal grief over a loss, or a major brag session. Those with busy schedules
can join SGML, but remain in the holiday mode. This way they can
read and participate when they have the time.
b.) If all involved
agree SGML could be disbanded, and replaced with ExpertGML, or
EmergencyGML. This list would simply be for emergency questions that
needed immediate attention.
c.) If all involved
agree SGML could be disbanded. GML would remain trying to be all things to
all people. This would require increased tolerance. It does not mean
that the Charter could be broken. No forwards, no pictures, and stay on
the subject, GERBILS. However, I believe the four point listed in the
previous section may once again become a major issue. It would be
important for all new members to be made aware of the Charter. (perhaps a
welcome wagon, in way of a hello, and here are some important things you need to
know. Charter and Archives.
3.) Respect on the
NET! This is my last point. We will always have differences.
What we enjoy talking about, what irritates us, and even some moral issues.
(shipping) However, no matter what the age we need to show respect to each
other. By following the Charter, by listening to others, and by
disagreeing in a respectful manner.
I for one am willing to support any of
the above mentioned options, or to listen to more. I do
feel that these issues are permanent to both lists, and needs to have some
respectful discussion from list participants.
If you have made it this far through the
e-mail,
thank you for listening,
Janet
