Now I know why a lot of people suggest getting gerbils from a breeder.
Boy do I feel like an idiot. I went to the pet store on Saturday to get
a pair of gerbils. It's a small pet store that's always been great at
helping me with my aquarium. Anyway, they had a tank of 4 gerbs, all of
them friendly and curious except for the one that I call "the biter".
Well, just nibbling and tasting, not drawing blood or hurting (much),
but I avoided that one anyway. I ask the pet shop worker if she can tell
what gender they are. She picks them up, looks at them, and says they're
all male. OK, I bought 2 of them. On the way out the door she says
"Well, you can always bring the back tomorrow so the owner can look at
them and double-check." Yikes!! I called the owner this morning to ask
if I could bring them in and have him tell me what they were. He said he
could take his "best educated guess". I've found some pictures and
descriptions fo what the different gerbil genders look like. Guess I'm
going to have to take a look myself and see if they at least look like
each other, even if I can't tell if they're male or female. Now I'm
praying that I have 2 of the same gender. They're really small so they
must be young, I hope that doesn't present a problem. Anyway, just
wanted to vent my frustrations.
