Destroying litters is extremely unusual. I have never known any gerbil,
in hundreds of matings, that destroyed whole litters like that. Even
when pups were harmed, it was usually an individual who would injure
pups when a few days old, mainly by eating feet.
If whole litters are disappearing I would suspect some disease mechanism
rather than a behavioural one.
