I had a gerbil couple who were several months old when I got them. They
were together for several more months.....no babies. For that reason
(amongst others) I decided to split them up. Put male with new female as a
breeding pair, put female with another female as a pet pair. All seemed
happy with the switch.

Within a week or two, new breeding pair were mating furiously! And now have
a 5 week old litter, and Mama is pregnant again. For some reason, original
pair just didn't seem to want to have babies. They seemed very compatible,
had bonded, slept together, groomed each other, but wouldn't make babies!
Maybe you have a similar problem with your guys.
