I made the comment about not putting food in my hand, only in relation to my
very timid gerbil.

I haven't done it personally, with my very timid gerbil, because she was
already very scared and when I put food in my hand she was then in
conflict...very stressful....because she wanted the food but she didn't want
the hand!  She either was frozen into immobility by the conflict, or made
mad dashes to get the food from my hand and then ran away even more afraid.
(Though also perhaps a bit cocky from the bravery she displayed!) :-)

Please understand, this is my personal opinion based on observation of MY
gerbil, and my be quite different for others.
