This method has worked best for me as well.  The same method works with a
paper towel tube.  Cover one end with your hand and put it on the floor and
sit really still.  Have a friend scare the gerbil toward the tube and when
you feel the gerbil touch your hand, quickly flip the tupe upward and cover
with your other hand.
