SOS Tail ripped off

Help my  year old daughter picked up her baby gerbil
by its tail last night. It broke off and i dont know
what to do. It is my fault for not telling her not to
do that. She said she saw the guy picking up mice by
thier tail at the pet store. Will the gerbil live? how
should i care for the gerbil?
