It might be better to not leave the sand bath in the cage permanently- it
can get soiled with litter and waste and reduce the quality of the bath
they get. Offer it for a short period of time, maybe 1/2 hour, once a week
or so.
You may also find that chinchilla dust does a better job at conditioning
the fur than sand. I've tried both and, while sand is fun for the, it
doesn't clean nearly as well as the chinchilla dust. I know others also use
cornmeal, but I've never tried that.
