I bought some hemp bedding at the Doncaster Show a couple of years ago.
However, I found that it did not allow the gerbils to burrow properly as it
was too light. What sort of "pine" do you have in your country. In the
UK, so-called pine woodchips are usually spruce and this is nowhere near as
bad as the true aromatic pines available inthe USA.
Recently I have been using Biocatolet for all my animals. This is a
recycled paper product. It is readily available in pet shops and
supermarkets in this country. They are big, heavy granules ,unlike some of
the other paper products around. It works really well, but is expensive.
It costs about 10 to fill a third of one of my 3 foot jird tanks.
It is more absorbent of smells than wood shavings and about equally good
for burrowing. The main advantage is for me. It is far less dusty and far
easier to pick up with as vaccuum cleaner.
Cheers
Sue
