Along that description, I've noticed depressed gerbils tend to be inactive.
Norm, when he lived alone, didn't run in his wheel...he just sat in it.  He
didn't chew very much;  Didn't get excited over new foods;  Tended to just
sit around, somewhat listless.  His body was not alert, his ears back and
his general demeanor, suggested unhappiness.

When I introduced him to Scar, he perked up noticeably.  He became alert,
active, and interested in everything around him.

The same depressed attitude was obvious in gerbils who were under attack
from cagemates.
