The pine cones, food, or bedding could of been the culprit. I would clean
the tank out and check the new food and bedding carefully before putting it
in the tank. If any of it is infest, I would throw it out and buy new
supplies.

Instead of pine cones,  I would give the gerbils wooden chew toys or
cardboard.
