This seems to be a popular topic these days- NEVER introduce animals of different species to each other, to play or live together. A gerbil-hamster introduction will end with one animal dead. Bites and scratches among different species easily become infected and abcess. While this may seems like a neat idea to owners who believe they have friendly, docile pets, it is not in the nature of the animals to accept an animal of another species.
