As to what kind of companion you want for your
gerbil...if you get a male, you will end up with litters
of pups. If you get a female, you won't. Unless
your gerbil or the one you get is mis-sexed...which
happens.
If you use the split-cage method of introduction, you
can certainly try to introduce a companion/cagemate
to the one you have now.
