>I can't find a divider to do split cage. I've searched pet catalogs and the >local pet chain to no avail. Does anyone know where I can purchase one? Are >there materials I can use to make one? Go to a home center or hardware store and get 'hardware cloth'. this is a mesh that is about 1/4" (.6cm) square. Also get some fairly stiff piano wire, and a side cutter (wire nipper, etc) and a pair of needlenose pliers. When cutting the cloth wear gloves. I've punched some of the mesh through a fingernail and this is not pleasant! Cut it to fit across the tank or cage snugly, and cut so that the wire ends are long on the piece. Take the piano wire, lay along the edge, and curl the wire ends around it securely with the pliers. This will stiffen the edge and allow you to tuck the sharp bits out of the way. Use a fine hand file on any stubborn sharp edges. I always use aquarium tanks, these are easier to fit one of these into, and I make it go from one corner to the opposite one, making two triangular enclosures. Make it from the bare bottom of the tank to the top mesh lid. The idea is that a dedicated and determined gerbil can't get around it; and the mesh is too strong for them to chew through. Good luck.
