I'm not sure if it's the same thing but I've heard some of my gerbils make
a squeaky noise in combination with a lower pitch, kind of grunty noise- it
almost sounds like they're mumbling. I don't know the actual cause of it,
but I've noticed that it seems to happen with older animals (about 1 1/2
years and up), and often when they've just woken up.
My own explanation- I've thought that it may have something to do with
congestion in the nose/sinus cavity. Not in a way that indicates illness-
I've never had any illnesses occur in connection with the noise. Something
similar to how human's voices sound different (deeper, thicker) after just
waking up. They haven't been active for a time and fluids and such just
kind of settle where they may. Once they're up and moving around, the noise
seems to go away.
I had one gerbil a while back who did this quite often. One time, I woke
her up and offered her a treat of some kind which she took, followed by two
little grunt-noises that I swear sounded like "Thank you!"
