Hi Donna,
I had read that the pair won't mate, or at least that
the female won't get pregnant, during the nursing
period...something about hormones kicking in to send
the message that another litter of babies would not be
a good idea until the first litter is weaned. There
is just something about the immediate post-birth
period (about a day) that allows for a successful
mating.
I read that on the Net somewhere...if anyone has had
the opposite experience, feel free to correct me! :)
