I keep gerbils in the school library where I work. The girls play with the
gerbils and often get them to go to sleep in their hands. These gerbils are
very tame as they are held all the time. The trick is to make them nice and
warm in your hand and then keep stroking them gently. It seems to sort of
send them into hypnotic sleep. They will also go to sleep in pockets or on
knees. It is quite cute to see a student sitting reading a book with a
gerbil fast asleep on their knee.
