Do make sure to prepare them as for if you were going to use
them in an aquarium.
In a non-metal pot, boil them for two hours, changing water at the
hour mark. Keep them covered. Once they're soaked up they
will stay sunk during the boiling, and keep them covered with
water.
This is to leach out anything that might be in them, and kill off
fungus and mold.
Then air dry for at least 24 hours and make sure they dry out
so that they don't mold or grow fungus.
If I was preparing driftwood for an aquarium, I would not air
dry but merely rinse after boiling until the wood had cooled
off, and put it in the tank.
Do note that your gerbils will gnaw anything, so buying expensive
aquarium wood might not be the thing you want to do.
