"Hardboard" is used for several wood and near-wood
products. The main thing is some of the glues used to
manufacture such things. There's a lot of formaldehyde
which offgasses used in those materials in processing
also. Plus it stains, takes up odors, and will disintegrate
in general when it gets wet with anything.
I'd stick to using white pine, hardwoods such as pear
or apple wood; or plain or corrugated cardboard.
