Pet store employees tend not to know much about gerbils. For a female
gerbil, that would be correct: one should attempt to pair a lone female
with a gerb her own size. For an adult MALE, your best bet is a male
pup, assuming you do not want to breed.

A split cage introduction is the recommended method.
