First off, Happy Easter to all who celebrate it.
I have a male and female that I hope will be living peacefully together,
eventually.. But for now, they're in a split-cage set up. They seem to be
doing great so far, this is their third day. I have seen no agressive
behavoir between them when they occassionally meet up and stick their noses
through the small bars. ^.^ The male is much older than the female, I've
found this age variation most favorable when performing a split-cage intro.
But, the female is no pup. She's just about seven months, going on eight as
April comes to an end. The male is approaching two years.
The problem that I've had with gerbil introductions in the past is that the
closer in age they are, the more difficult the introduction can be. Even if
it is male/female. Is there anything I can do to make the intro. go more
smoothly, any suggestions all you gerbil experts have? -.o And when the time
comes to put them together [I've always waited at least a week], what kind of
cage set up should I release them into- and is there a system to it all,
i.e., putting the male in first followed by the female? I'd like to hear the
processes that all of you go through for a successful introduction.
I haven't had many problems in the past with this, most have worked out. It
was just until recently when I had a stubborn pair that, even after weeks of
split-cage, refused to cooperate with one another.. a fight broke out every
time I put them together. *sigh*.. -.- I hope to avoid this again with the
list's help and advice. ^.^
Also, about gerbils and their scents, [Which if I'm not mistaken, have a lot
to do with an introduction.. why we switch them from side to side of their
split-cage] is it easier to introduce gerbils that are directly related?
I've noticed that when I introduced a brother to a brother [Even though they
had never been in a cage together at one time, they were from different
litters..] they took to each other a lot faster than an unrelated pair of
males I had. This has been the same with related female pairs I have, also.
Has anyone else ever noticed this? Just a thought..
Thanks to all who reply in advance. ^.^
