The split cage introduction shouldn't take months
within a few days to a week (with plenty of switching
sides back and forth every day) they should be
settling down with each other.  If they don't get
along after this amount of time, you could try another
week, but then I would give up.

I would find a local breeder and give Fred and a split
cage to the breeder.  Have the breeder find a
compatible pup and then return to you a bonded
same-sexed pair.  Your parents might agree to that.  I
know it doesn't matter so much the number of gerbils
as the number of tanks.

I would definately go with a pup for Fred.  He's
probably be a bit traumatized by George and needs a
non threating match who he can nuture (my guess)
