I usually have between 3 and 5.

Slate related colours like slate-burmese, polar fox, silver-agouti, etc.
But other colours occure because of outcrosses and what was already in lines
when I got the gerbils.

Er, I try not to count, maybe about 30-something.
Some are retired breeders that are too old for anyone really wanted to adopt
as a pet so they stay here.
And some are just pets I got attatched to even if they arent bred.
And others are available to place but weren't selected yet, often because
they are plainer colours.

Rats (what I work witht he most actually)
mice (a little less so then the gerbils)
hamsters (very limitted)
guinea pigs (limitted)
chinchillas (very limitted)

I dont have one favorite colour. Pretty much all the slate related colours
I really like, and thats why I chose those for breeding. I think originally
thoughit was the silver-agouti and the silver nutmeg that caught my eye
(looking online) but after seeing other colours in person I thought those
were all pretty beautiful too.
There are traits Id like to see appear in gerbils that we do not have yet
but that occure in other species- like a tortishell/calico appearance,
tanned belly, satin fur, rexed fur, chocolate...
