Because in Australia there are many species of animals living on the
edge of extinction. Rats, mice, rabbits and several other species have
been introduced and have done enormous damage to native fauna. In
particular there are some endangered desert species such as some hopping
mice, that would be directly competed against by any gerbils that
escaped into the wild. Australia has very strong rules to stop yet more
alien species invading the continent.
