Usually either gender does fine in same-sex pairs, but male pairs tend
to be more stable.

I used to think my male pair was sexually frustrated. . . turns out
this was marking behavior, not mating behavior. They have scent glands
on their bellies. This marking may look like mating if you haven't
recently seen gerbils mating.

I have heard it can happen, but usually it is the females that "go
crazy."

Sometimes. An aquarium is usually best, tho, rather than the tubes. The
tubes get chewed up.

Bright eyes, energetic, curious. But don't hold it against them if
they're sleeping when you see them. Healthy gerbs should wake up pretty
quickly tho. If you set your hand in the cage and keep it still, they
will likely approach, sniff, and walk over your hand (tho they may run
away at first.)

Have fun!
