If the belly color is the same as that on the dorsal fur then it is in all
probability a young Nutmeg. This color looks the same as DEH until their
first molt. Then you will see heavy black ticking on the hair shafts. This
color will be the same on the back as well as the belly. The genetic makeup
for this color is aaC*eeG*P*. All gerbils which have the same color fur on
their belly as their backs are "aa". This recessive extends color to the
belly fur, resulting in a "self" colored gerbil.
A Dark Eyed Honey on the other hand will be coded A*C*eeG*P*. Gerbils with
the dominant "A" have white belly fur.
