my gerbils are weird eaters and I have been trying to mix my own feed out of stuff they actually eat based on the nutrition percentages on the web site.  but I have a question.  Are the percentages by weight or by calorie?  that is, would 8% fat be about one gram of fat out of 10 grams of food  (that would be 9 calories out of 45, or 20 % of calories), or would it be 8 calories (about 1 gram) of fat out of 100 calories of food? (that would be one gram of fat and 23 grams of protein or carbohydrate) There is a pretty big difference.  (the sweeties are such weird eaters that they won't eat seeds at all--even sunflower seeds.  Not even a nibble.  How weird is that?)  How much sodium should they get?  do I need to worry about other minerals, like calcium, if they are not nursing or pregnant?
