What is brindling?

Hi everybody,

I've read with interest the notes about naming the new gerbil color, and other emails 
about genetics.  I'm completely confused, though I know I'll have no problems if I 
actually just sit down and pay closer attention, not just scan them like now.

Anyhow, I'm curious as to what brindling means?
