What I do to trim my gerbils nails is this:
1. scruff the gerbil. (they have loose skin over their back, right around the neck.) Pull the skin tight (you won't hurt the gerbil). You should be holding skin from the neck area to over the spine above the tummy. Gently fold the tail and hold it between the fingers the hand doing the holding. 2. take cat nail clippers (or whatever type
of clipper you prefer) and trim away the nails. If you 'quick' a nail
(make it bleed), don't worry. If you have a styptic pencil or some styptic
powder, you can apply it to make the bleeding stop.
I find that wearing a glove makes the job harder,
but some prefer to do that. I trim my gerbil's nails every few
months since they live on aspen chips.
