Hello Jennifer,
there are two possibilities I can think of:
1. Your gerbils has caught a cold or he has bronchitis. One of my gerbs once
had bronchitis, we went to see a vet where "Speedy" got an injection and
some fluid to drink for the next few days. - And he was better. Another
gerbil caught a cold 2 or 3 months ago and he was also breathing very hard.
But after a few days with much sleep and warmth (lamp!) he was recovered.
2. Sad but (possibly) true: like a third gerbil of mine, "Lucky", yours
could also be close to death (3 years is old!) and therefore no medicine
works.
First, I�d say keep him warm and in a quiet place where he can (if possible)
regain his health and spear him the stress of being taken to the vet�s all
the time - you have seen that it doesn�t do him any good.
