Don�t you think that the means you propose is close to torturing the little
animals!?! You have experienced it for yourself that nothing could be done
against the course of nature (aging and dying) and you want another gerbil
to have an artificially lenghtened life?
I don�t say "you should not go and see a vet if such a small animal is sick"
(I have done so several times, cancer operations etc.), but if you see with
your own eyes that these measurements only serve to lenghten a life that is
no longer live-worthy than it�s a torture for the little animal.
