I have adopted gerbil form other clans myself. What I have done is to either
keep the initials of their original clan in their names or assign a theme to
their names. This helps give me a clue as to what genetic line each gerbil
is from. I also try to incorporate the names of the parents in the nest
generation. For example, I named a lovely Slate female breeder Ace's SS
Cinder. Her sire's name is Ace and her dame's name is Silver Snow.

I don't think having more than one clan in a household would be a issue. I
think that it would make it easier to be sure what genetic stock you have,
if you are breeding, as well as provide an easy way to differentiate their
naming patterns.
