Gerbils rarely produce babies after the age of 2. However, they continue to
enjoy sex throughout their life. The fact that your female actually
accepted a new male, suggests that her fertility was waning. It can be
extremely difficult to get a fertile female to accept a new mate. However,
once menopausal, they are much easier to pair up. Be reassured that your
gerbils behaviour is completely normal. They are enjoying a very rewarding
partnership.
