Interesting enough, one of my aquariums - my husband cracked the glass in one panel badly for me. It's a 15 gallon long. So what I did was use some peg board. (1/4" board with holes in it for hanging workshop tools, etc) to make a new wall. This wall works well for inserting water bottles through with wire hangers and as the wood was inexpensive for a whole sheet I'm not too worried about the eventual cost of replacing if the gerbils chew through it (though noone has tried yet) or it gets messed up from litter.
