There is some evidence that chlorine, even in very low dosages can be highly irritant to rodents. It has been suggested that after cleaning with bleach you would need to air for maybe period of weeks to get the chlorine vapour down to safe levels. In one study, rats and mice were found to be sensitive to chlorine at levels as low as 0.4 parts per million. Normally hot water should be all that is required.
