With Yahoo you don't actually have to become a member of Yahoogroups to get email. You can subscribe directly to groups and just get mail. So all they need is an email address for you. You won't be able to use all the features of the webpage that way as you would need to register to get a password to allow you access to that, but if all you want is mail as at present, that shouldn't be a problem.
