Building javadoc

I'm not very familiar with maven, but I'm under the impression that 
"maven javadoc" should build the docs.
Currently I get "Unknown goal javadoc" from maven.

"maven javadoc:generate" does create 2 doc directories, but they remain 
empty.

Is there any way to generate the javadocs with maven right now?
