Only the installer itself writes to the registry, and that's just version and uninstall info, so not relevant to a portable app config. get_iplayer can run in a portable fashion, but you have to feed it enough information on the command line to make it work. The principal convenience of the Thinstall approach is that you don't have to include all that information on the command line with every invocation.
