FWIW, I found this same problem in Ubuntu 11.10, which does use an earlier version of FFmpeg. At the time, I just figured something had gone wrong in the Libav fork that Ubuntu adopted for FFmpeg. I didn't investigate further, but I noted at the time that the Fedora 15, Fedora 16, and Ubuntu PPA versions. all of which derive from the original FFmpeg lineage, worked fine. Even though Ubuntu switched to Libav in 11.04, the code base hadn't really diverged for the release they used, so the 11.04 version of FFmpeg still worked OK. Hopefully, something will come of your bug report.
